Green Transport Corridors 2025 – Advancing Green and Secure Maritime Transport

Now in its third year, the Green Transport Corridors 2025 conference brought together more than 80 industry experts, business leaders, and policymakers in Turku this October to discuss the impact of the green transition on logistics and maritime transport.

The three parallel working sessions on the first day offered a valuable opportunity to dive into themes that are crucial for the future of Finnish and Baltic maritime transport – the availability of green energy, digital transport chains, and the development of sustainable ports.

Facilitated by PBI Research Institute, the discussions aimed to identify concrete actions that can strengthen Finland’s position as a forerunner in green logistics and maritime innovation.

1. How Green Transport Can Strengthen National Security and Resilience

This session explored Finland’s transition toward green maritime transport and its implications for national resilience and security.

Key discussion themes included domestic renewable fuel production, multi-fuel and hybrid vessel opportunities, and the operational reliability of port infrastructure

The group underlined the importance of cross-sector collaboration and strong political support to reduce import dependency and secure the continuity of supply chains.

Investments in local energy solutions were also seen as a key means to strengthen Finland’s self-sufficiency.

2. Building Integrated Green Transport Corridors

The second group focused on developing integrated and sustainable transport corridors across the Baltic Sea and Northern Europe.

Key topics included cross-border cooperation, harmonisation of infrastructure and standards, and the fair distribution of costs and benefits

Concrete actions discussed included implementing shore power solutions, developing digital corridor models, and promoting new business models that accelerate the adoption of green technologies.

The group also recognised the critical role of education and skills development in enabling the transition toward green corridors.

3. Making Finland a Hub for Electric Maritime Transport

The third session discussed Finland’s potential to become a hub for electric and zero-emission maritime transport.

Participants highlighted the need for pilot projects, cluster-based knowledge sharing, and integration between the maritime and energy sectors

Flexible standards, open innovation, and supportive regulatory and funding frameworks were identified as key enablers of progress.

Strengthening collaboration, launching demonstration projects, and reinforcing Finland’s international position were seen as the main steps forward.

Next Steps

PBI Research Institute extends its sincere thanks to all speakers, facilitators, and participants for their active contribution and inspiring discussions.

The event’s diverse perspectives and strong dialogue showed that the future of green and secure maritime transport will be built through collaboration – by sharing knowledge, expertise, and common goals.

Based on the discussions and collected insights, PBI and Åbo Akademi University will begin designing potential research, development, and innovation initiatives around these key themes.

Project concepts and collaboration opportunities will be shared with all GTC conference participants later this year, and PBI warmly invites interested organisations to join in advancing these initiatives and continuing the dialogue.

The Green Transport Corridors will continue to serve as a collaborative platform connecting industry, academia, and public actors to strengthen Finland’s role in sustainable and competitive maritime transport.
