The NavisSpace project

As part of our commitment to advancing the maritime sector, PBI is actively involved in the development of the cruise industry. A recent example of this is the successful completion of the NavisSpace project in 2024 that PBI coordinated and supported since the project preparation phases. This collaborative project brought together leading partners, including Meyer Turku, Kone, Kudos Dsign, SeaKing, Åbo Akademi University, and Aalto University, to create solutions for more sustainable and efficient cruise ships, all while enhancing the passenger experience.

In the face of challenges such as the aftermath of COVID-19 and the increasing demand for responsible operations, the cruise industry must adapt to new expectations. This includes meeting stricter environmental standards, ensuring safety, and managing financial pressures. NavisSpace addressed these challenges by combining early-stage design research with the latest insights into passenger behavior and sustainability.

Through the project, innovative ways to reduce emissions, improve operational efficiency, and enhance passenger satisfaction was explored. By focusing on the evolving needs of the industry, the NavisSpace project helped to define elements of what a sustainable and future-proof cruise experience might look like.

PBI’s involvement in such projects reflects our ongoing commitment to sustainable development in the maritime sector, helping the industry navigate its future while staying true to Nordic values of responsibility and innovation.
